Evert The Microsoft support article that you indicate is an example of the sensible (and polite?) approach, which in my view could have been adopted by Millennia. However, I can understand the thinking that took the simplest approach, to remove the prior (v8) installation entirely except for the users’ data and images and settings, and to modify the data structure required for the v9 changes. That retained the entire folder structure and location which was in use by users for their v8 Legacy install. As indicated by the posts of others, it is not a big deal to re-install v8 – but it would have been a sensible precaution by each user (and in my view, by Millennia) to have saved the v8 data first.
Perhaps it will be different “next time” – I would be hoping that they move into the 21st century and have a .NET (computer language) version of Legacy FT – which could very easily make Apple and Linux versions available (using what is called “.NET Core”). It is normal to retain or offer to remove older versions – just make sure that your install process uses different folder names per version to stop the problem. Yes, Legacy Family Tree 9.0 will overwrite Legacy 8 but will not overwrite Legacy 7.5 or earlier. When installing Legacy 9.0 only some of your customized settings from earlier versions will be retained. Any of the font and color settings from earlier versions will need to be re-set if you want your own look and feel.” Could that be any clearer? I don’t think so. In fact, I know of only a very few Windows programs that don’t completely replace older versions of the same software when upgrades take place, so there is absolutely nothing unusual about the behaviour of the Legacy 9 installation, especially as it is clear that the underlying database will be substantially altered because of the new features and can no longer be directly used in any previous version of the software. So, retaining an old installation version would be entirely useless unless a user wanted to maintain two completely separate versions of their family history data. With software upgrades it is always a question of “Buyer beware”. Golden Rules: Don’t be an early adopter if you are risk averse; and don’t install any software without researching it properly first! I agree with Kris that this behavior is unacceptable. The v9 installer must at least ask permission before deleting the old version. No problem, I'm thinking, I can always revert to v.8 as I've made all the backups, etc. So I've been mostly happily using v.8. Over the weekend, I hit the wrong button and accidentally opened v.9. I realized my mistake when it wanted to convert my family file, so I said, "No thanks" and closed the program. Today, I wanted to open v.8 and -- it's gone. It's not there anymore. The entire directory has been deleted. So, v.9 does not only delete v.8 on install. This is completely unacceptable and NOT standard practice. I have every version of Open Office, for instance, on my computer as I used to do a lot of QA with that project. New versions do not delete old versions. NEVER have I EVER had a new version of ANY program remove a previous version. There are a lot of reasons people might keep old versions of software. One of them might be that they PAID for it? I paid for v.8. v.9 does inappropriate things without notice or warning -- though even in that case it wouldn't be acceptable. I wondered why I kept getting "malware" warnings when I was using v.9 and had to white list it. It's on the black list now. -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list [email protected]<mailto:LegacyUserGroup%40legacyusers.com> To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/
