Margaret,

They don't work in Legacy 8 & 9 in most places.
It has nothing to do with how you enter them.
They just don't work.
There's a bug report on this and I've just added another note.

Jennifer,
It not render for me in v 7.5. Have you tried copying this character —
into the search filter?

I have versions 8 and 9, but am unable to quickly test for you.

Yes, Margaret, mine are from the same place.
When I was using v 7.5 the Emdash was rendered properly, but in v
9 (I skipped v 8) the Emdash is rendered as ’97 and I can’t find
instances where there is no space between characters.

I have this work, using this character —

I have these characters copying from Australia's trove digitised
newspapers into my Event-notes

Detail Search | Individual | Event-notes | Contains | —

Works OK for me using Legacy 7.5

I am still having trouble finding with instances where Legacy has
rendered
Emdash as '97.
Where I have entered an Emdash without a space before or after, I
get for
example "BEHM. '97 Relatives and Friends" , I don't know how to
search for
these in Legacy. If it is not possible is there another way
outside Legacy
to search?
