Hi Debbie Takes a bit to get your head around this part of the system. I guess from your description the father was married more than once and presumably you have him in the database with multiple marriages (let’s say there were 2). You added these children to him alone. But in Legacy you have effectively said they were born to a partnership of the father and yet another, but unknown, wife. Hence you now have 3 marriages for the father. Legacy always presumes that there are both a father and mother to a child and if you don’t include one or the othr then it makes up a placeholder person and also an unknown “marriage” (i.e. coupling).
By trying to add the correct mother, as the wife of their father, you are retaining the concept that there were 3 marriages, and that 2 of them were to the same person. So it looks as though he married the same person twice. That does happen (Liz Taylor and Richard Burton!). I have an example where a couple married and it appears to have been declared unlawful so they did it again 6 weeks later, but both marriage certificates exist and are available for purchase. The actual way to do this is to - Note the RIN numbers of the 2 children - Unlink the children from their parents so they are now “orphaned” in the system - Delete the “phantom marriage”. This is either father + unknown or, if you accepted the duplicate marriage message, the”extra” marriage of the correct father and mother. Use the list of spouses to check what the situation is. - Go to the correct father/mother combination - Add the children, using the “son/daughter - existing person” option and find correct person by name/rin Now you have the children connected to the correct parents. So I added them just to the father (no mother). After research, I have decided they belong to wife #1 (already linked to father). When I try to add mother, I select the option to link to an existing individual (the box title is: add spouse t0). After selecting the correct mother, I receive a box (Duplication) with the message that [mother] is already the wife of [father]. What am I doing wrong? Debbie
