Here's some of the information that has been posted to Facebook on the mapping problem from John Lisle who heads the Beta Testing program.

John B. Lisle As the Legacy Test lead, let me make a statement (again) on the Maps issue as I am not on the cruise... -

Bing introduced a radically different approach (Version 7) to how an application like Legacy would embed a map a bit over a year ago; however, they retained the "classic" interface that Legacy was using. Last Spring, they introduced the next version (Version 8) of the new set of APIs and announced that Version 7 would be deactivated in July. They did not announce that the classic APIs would also be deactivated.

The technology to implement these APIs is quite advanced Javascripting and unlike anything else in Legacy. (Feel free to Google Bing Maps...) As a participant in the original implementation of Mapping about 8-10 years ago, I know that took the developers almost a month to get a version that could even be shown to the Beta Testers. And then we spent some time ironing out issues and trying to improve the user interface. Based on my analysis (as a part-time Javascripter...), the new implementation is going to take just as long both to implement and test. Remember, last time it was done under the cover of creating a new version of Legacy, not out front as a bug fix while other day to day issues need also to be worked on.

The last report I had from the developer was that he has gotten a map to display but still has to get pin setting and a dozen other features working.

And, there is still a big issue hoving over the final solution. One of the reasons we (and many other applications) retained the classic interface was because the licensing agreement with Microsoft allowed unlimited maps. The new API set has a limit to the number of free maps per month that the Legacy user base will exceed in hours.

It may become an issue that each user will need to acquire their own "Map Key" so the limit is on each user rather than all users. This is what most TNG users have to do to use the Google Maps in that application. Or maybe Legacy can negotiate a deal with Bing for its user base.

Please understand that this is a very convoluted issue. As a person who used to use Maps every day, I feel I am in withdrawal in my personal research. Legacy developers are not ignoring the user base. This is just a very tough problem, and they are taking this very seriously.

Hi

This has been asked and answered many times on here and facebook,

please don’t let this be a long winded debate again. !!!!

The programmers have already said this is not going to be a quick fix,
it not the only priority.

Legacy is a program far beyond any other. Please be patient there are
always other jobs that need doing in genealogy.

Please can we move on

Seems that Legacy may have caused the problem...

Cathy,

Have to admit that your comment about maps -- “Bing turning off the
way they were being accessed” -- has me curious From whom did you
receive this information?

I am only asking as while I know of two genealogy software (Legacy is
one) where maps stopped functioning three months ago, I do know of
three other genealogy software that use Bing maps without problem and
have had no interruptions during the same period.

Thanks,

Denise

Maps are broken in all versions of Legacy currently due to Bing
turning off the way they were being accessed.
They will be fixed in Legacy 9 in a future update.
