Repyling to my own uestion with a work-around in case anyone else needs it:

I often underestimate the search list. But I have a friend who eminds me not
to! Hre's what he suggested:

 - clear search list
 - do a detailed search: first condition Marriage, looking for Marriage Date
equal to (leave value blank)
 - add a second condition with OR between the two, looking for Marriage Date
not equal to (leave value blank)
 - do the search, and output to a CSV file in the usual way.

He's cryptic, but it works I think.
