Cynthia,

If you are using View - Split Screen to do this, then the step you may be missing is to have a different file open in each half. What you need is a new empty file on one side. So click in that side and then use File - New File to create a new empty file which will then open on that side.

Choose the Option to Start a new family file and refuse all the wizard options and options to enter any people at all to it. Keep choosing to do it all yourself later.

If easier you can create the new empty file before using View - Split Screen and then choose it when you are asked if you want to open a different file.

Then you can drag people into that new file.

I have been trying for many hours to split a file . . . can't get past
'go'.

Yes, I printed out the directions "How to Copy From One File to
Another; and also 'Splitting Family Files'.

I start with the Family View of the person for whom I wish to have ALL
ancestors. Next I split the screen. This is where I am STUCK.

I have hovered over one of the screens for a box, which does appear
and then I drag it over to the identical screen on the left, wait for
the "Copy Between Family Files' window and Nothing happens.

Don't know if I need a blank screen on the left and the right screen
with all of my information???

Just can't get any farther along . . . I need to have baby steps as I
am 79 years young and I do want to accomplish this task. I have
18,000+ ancestors in my main file, and I want to split off just our
Native American file to stand on its' own.

Hoping someone can walk me through this, thanking you in advance!
