IrfanView is my default photo viewer. It is also a program that allows you to see the information about the photo that is 'imbedded' in the photo. You can leave comments/information here much like 'writing on the back' of the photo. Here I will add the information about the photo, such as a description/names of the people, as it will be a permanent part of it.

To do what you want I increase the canvas size by adding to the bottom margin, then add my text there.
