Use Options 6.1 to tell Legacy the folder where you keep your data files (Note this is a global setting so if you have multiple family files they all have to be in this folder).

In each family file you can tell Legacy the top folder (if you have a media folder tree with sub-folders) or the main media folder since this is a family file setting you can have media for different family files in different folders.

What you cannot move is the ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_Appdata folder since if you do Legacy will simply create a new copy each time you start the program and will populate it with default settings.

You can however set a different path for your Documents folder in Windows and Legacy will use that to create the ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree folder. Many people do this to keep their Windows Documents folder on a drive other than the one where Windows is installed.

Hi Chris! Thanks for your reply.

Am I able to move the whole file:

E:\Users\******\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\

out of \Documents\ and to to another location? If yes, how can I do it, so Legacy recognizes the new location?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi

You can locate the family files (*.fdb etc) and media files (*jpg etc) anywhere you linek, including putting them onto Dropbox, which I would NOT recommend.

There are setting in Customise / Locations where you can specify the default locations for these, so mine look like this

         E:\Users\*******\Genealogy\Hill and related families\Family Tree\
        E:\Users\*******\Genealogy\Hill and related families\Family Tree\Media\

I have left the location for temporary files in the default setting, though you can change that as well.

         E:\Users\******\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Temp\

In addition, when you open or save as a file you can specify where it is.

Personally, I would like a method to specify the file and media folders dependent on each family tree so that you can keep them separate. Thus family Brown is in folder ....\Brown and family Smith is in .......\Smith, and get Legacy to make the settings on the fly.

Also, if you are collecting a large number of images or media, it is worth getting the Media folder structured, by type of items (census, BMD etc) or by individual/family. If you don't do that first you will have the fun of relocating and reattaching them later when you realise that you should have done it.

Chris

Subject: [LegacyUG] Can I move the whole Documents/Legacy Family Tree folder?

By default Legacy stores family files in your Documents folder within the Legacy Family Tree\Data sub-folder.

I’m reinstalling Legacy, and I am asked about a new Destination folder for the program itself (Legacy9), but I don’t get asked about choosing a new folder for the Legacy Family Tree folder (_App Data; Data, Media).

Is Legacy locked into Documents/Legacy Family Tree? Or can I move the Legacy Family Tree to different location (and how?) When I move the folder, Legacy seems to think it is a new install.

Thanks!

Rob
