This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require

Hi Valerie

GEDCOM file is a raw, text formatted database of a family tree structure - individual, marriages, events, sources etc. - but it does not, and cannot, include media information. The current version, currently 5.5.1, was developed FamilySearch as part of process of building their family tree system in the 1990s and has become the standard for data interchange between multiple, and different, genealogy systems, although most of them, including Legacy, can now import and export using other systems formats, and potentially handle media information. There have been a number of plans to build a new interchange format, but that seems to be not going anywhere.

Since the GEDCOM file, with a .ged extension, is text it is capable of being opened by any text processor - Notepad, Notepad++, Word etc., - but it generally needs to have a .ged extension for it to be imported into a system. Legacy will export a GEDCOM with a .ged extension, even if you put an different extension in the dialog - test.txt.ged gets created.

If your system is always opening, from Windows Explorer, a .ged file with Word it is because the default setting in Windows for the extension has been set that way, and you will need to change it. This is based on a Win7 system:

1. Right-click on the file in explorer
2. Click on Open With... - the system will give you a list of possible programs as Recommended Programs. 3. Below those is a line labelled Other Programs which has a down arrow at the right end. 4. Click on the down arrow and the system will show you a list of other programs 5. Select the one that you want to use and ensure that the Always use... tick is enabled
6. Click on OK to make that the default program.
7. You can also use the Browse option to physically locate a program which is not in the list.

It is not obvious that the down arrow can be clicked on - it took me a couple of years to find it.

If the file is a valid GEDCOM file, ie raw text, with the wrong extension you can just rename it with a .ged extension. BUT, if Word has opened and saved it as a .doc or .docx extension it will then be a formatted Word document, and possibly restructured. Copying the text from Word to Notepad should work, but it may have problems if Word has made any Line Feed changes.

Regards

Chris
