Hi Valerie

Normally a download from any of the sites should create a file it the same format as the original file on their site. The only exception to that would be if it gave you the option to specify a location and filename, when you could then specify a different extension but not change the format of the file.

I have searched through FindMyPast, MyHeritage and Ancestry and cannot find any datasets which include Jerome in the file name. But there is an Irish website for the cemetery in Dublin and a few other sites referring to it. None of these seem to include any ability to download any information.

Normally, when a database or dataset in entered into a genealogy website, the site will create an index to the information in the dataset, and potentially save it, if it is already a data file, or by creating scanned images. That would normally result in a collection of images, as we can see when reading parish records, or the original datafile saved in whichever format it was provided, normally as a PDF file.

If the files that you are downloading are Word Documents - .doc or .docx - then that will because that was the format that they were sent in. I can see no reason for a genealogy site to convert a file, and especially to Word, unless that is the correct format that type of information, such as as free-flow text with different fonts, sizes etc..

Certainly, in the past, people did record their information as Word documents because they could then print them out and post them. These days, with email and genealogical systems, we now work with datasets.

One question regarding your files - are the contents purely GEDCOM records or is there any other information in them. Remember that a GEDCOM file will start like this

You can always select the text within Word and copy it into a new text file in Notepad, then save it with a .ged extension. You can also send me a copy of the file, as downloaded, to my email address above.

Regards

Chris

I can see all these downloaded files but they are all word documents and should be .ged. What can I do to stop this from happening please ?
