I make the name most likely used every day the preferred name, even if it
has nothing to do with any given name. Uncle Paddy xxxxxx was actually born
Arthur xxxxxx. If there are different names (legal, original birth names
etc.), list them as alternatives. This puts more names in the search and
index results but lets you find them any way you want to. Thinking about
it, in the alternate names panel it would be nice to be able to add a
comment (birth name, nick name, military or census records etc.). I have an
ancestor born at sea and listed one way on the passenger list and very
differently when christened two months after landing. Confusing for a while
but the listed parents and DOB all line up.
