Ian,
It's greyed out when you have a relationship entered for that person.
You'll find you have an unknown/blank partner. You can enter one simply
by opening the Marriage Information screen and saving out rather than
cancelling out.
So unlink the partner and that check box will become active again.
You can unlink by using the right click menu when you click on her or
clicking her spouse icon.
