I don't know what you mean by 3rd party software, but the legacy database is a 
Microsoft access database so can be read by many other database implementations.

This also makes it easy for other programmers to get acccess to the data.  On this 
point I think thast I read somewhere that one of the reasons for giving V3 away was to 
encourage add-on development; is this correct?

Two possibilities are:

1.  As has already been mentioned a *good* tree draw facility

2.  A source data repository along the lines of Clooz.  I have started on this (since 
I think Clooz is expensive) but not with regards to linking it to a legacy database.  
As an Acccess hacker (err I mean analyst and software engineeer), I would be happy 
contribute to the development of such an add on with others.
