You must not be familiar with Family Tree Maker and certain other such well
known programs.

The illegitimate child family unit is handled very easily in Family Tree
Maker where a child can be entered with its mother, but with the mother's
spouse field remaining blank. The program then entitles this a "spouseless
relationship." Additional children of the same mother, with other spouses or
other non-spouses, are entered under separate marriages/relationships
pages/screens. What it amounts to is that data for each
marriage/relationship is entered on a separate screen and does not require
presence of a spouse, or a contrived substitute for a non-spousal name.
These distinct family units are appropriately distinguished in reports.

I am not suggesting the use of FTM, but am trying to assure that the
original question, from Sally [[EMAIL PROTECTED]], is neither far-fetched
nor unholy.
