No, it's not a dumb question - at least as far as I am concerned.  I went
'round and 'round with tech support over this issue.  I was told you could
read Legacy files with Access, but try as I might, I could not read them.
After they insisted that I could, and I insisted that I couldn't, they
finally mentioned that you had to use Access 2000, and I had been trying
with Access 97.  Voila!!

In short, the answer is 'No, you can't read the Legacy files with Access
97'.  Access 2000 works like a charm.
