I am an avid user of Legacy and make good use of the Intellishare process
whilst sharing a large file with a group of researchers around the world.
Unfortunately, I am plagued by a duplicate source problem which gets worse
each time I do a reconciliation with the rest of the group. I have posted
about this problem before and have received a great deal of help from Michel
Lacoursiere, who has described in great detail on this List a process which
can be used to remove these duplicates.

I am finding, however, that there are some drawbacks with this system. It
involves creating a gedcom of the file concerned and then importing it into
a new file. This removes duplicates where there are only two copies of each
source, but in my case, after a good deal of reconciliation, some pieces of
information may have six or eight identical sources attached to the event.
It would therefore entail me gedcoming the file out and back in again
several times to get the whole process done and anyway the duplicates just
keep coming back!

There are one or two further complications which may be unique to our file.
Some of our researchers have placed research information into the source
area for the research notes without actually entering anything in the
research notes themselves. There is a lot of extra information in these
source areas which is removed by the gedcom process because there is no
corresponding note in the actual field. Michel also pointed out some time
ago that the gedcom generation and then importing back process wipes out any
event which happens to be called Address. We have many of these in our file.

I have spent many hours this evening trying to follow this process through
and am unable to clean it up this way as too much extraneous information
will be lost. All I really need is some sort of add on or small program
which could scour my file and remove any duplicate sources attached to the
same event. Again, through Michel, I understand that there may be someone
out there perfecting an add on which does this; he contacted Michel off list
some months ago.

I can't keep sharing information backwards and forwards if sources are
constantly duplicated. The file just gets more cluttered each time and I'm
not even sure why these duplicate sources occur in the first place. Does
anyone know why?

This is a problem which I have reported on numerous occasions now; it must
have a simple solution. I just need something that will identify duplicate
sources on the same event and remove them. Ultimately, it would be
preferable if the programmers could find out why it happens and stop it.

Thanks for listening
kind regards
Steve Addison
