Cynthia,

well, your problem is a very basic one. There are at least 2 methods
to get what you want:

1. Open Notepad - Wordpad is ok too, or any other plain text (!)
editor
2. On the main menu bar click on Files | open
3. In the dialog that opens navigate to where your gedcom sits on your
pc, select (mark) the file and click Open (or is it OK?)

Alternatively you could also drag & drop your gedcom over the
notepad.exe file entry in Explorer, this would open the file
immediately. But you need to have both the file and the program
visible in your explorer in order to do so. Can be done with 2
Explorer windows open at the same time or if you have a Notepad icon
sitting at your desktop or in the task tray. If all this doesn't apply
or if you aren't familiar with this, the basic method described works
fine.

The other method referred to by Lisa only works if your context
(right-click) menu has the 'Open with...' entry. Most of the times
this is the first entry on top of the list. There's also a 'Send
to...' entry in the context menu. There you are offered several
options like Lisa described. But again, you may not have Notepad in
that list.

Under 'Open with...' a dialog prompts you for the program to use. Move
your cursur down into the second bigger entry box where you'll see all
the applications on your PC. Move down to 'Notepad' (you can speed
this up by pressing the N-key). If you don't want to change the
standard program for opening Gedcoms in, don't tick the 'Always open
this file with ...' box! Now just click OK.

If you don't see the 'Open with...' and also don't have Notepad under
the 'Send to...' options, it's better to follow the procedure
described at the beginning of this message.

Good luck

Tilman

P.S. Sorry, my reply was posted under the thread, and it shows there
quite fine on my PC (OE 5.5.) Don't know why you wouldn't have it
threaded? This may depend on how different mail-progs do read messages
... and also on the VIEW setting you have selected. I guess you can
change this in Outlook too.

You can btw find detailed directions on how to open specific files
with the program of your choice if you search the Windows Help (I
assume you're using some flavour of Windows). Click on START, select
Help and in Help enter e.g. the 'keywords file open in program' under
the Search tab. But you'll probably know this already.
