Dear Matt and List

This is a round about way to explain why I find the USER FILING NUMBERS so
useful. . I used to have folders for every person but as my data and tree
grew, the folders became too numerous and cumbersome and information for
more then one person might be contained on a 'piece of paper' , occasionally
I was thinking who do I file it with. eg Copies of pages from School Rolls,
containing many family members details
As I got more into computers, I was finding I didn't look at the files so
often rather I looked at the details on screen.with each detail sourced I
could see where I got the information from.
I thus then decided to do away with the name folders and have separate
folders of the actual pieces of paper I accumulate , labelled Birth,
Death, Marriage Certificates; Military records; Shipping Lists; School
Records, Wills ; etc... to name a few

It isn't often I refer back to the actual 'piece' of paper once I have
transcribed and or entered the details into Legacy and sourced them. I use
the USER FILING NUMBERS then as a source Indexing system.

Thus the User Filing Numbers say for example an Obituary notice in a
newspaper for Joe BLOGGS . It could state Death date, occupation parents
names, where from if emigrated, children's names, their residence, etc..
etc.. Now this Obituary is a 'Source ' for me for all these details,
I will put the copy in a acid free pouch and it is labelled [OBIT-01] ,
then next obituary would be [OBIT-02] etc....

In Legacy the details it refers to are sourced as eg "Cairns Post
Newspaper,
12 March 1901, page 3 column 2 etc........." with User Filing Number
entered as [OBIT-01] and append it as source to any of the above details.
So if 2 years down the track I want to find the newspaper cutting that
mentions a person's sisters residence it is easier to go straight to eg
[OBIT-01] in a folder then looking for the sibling who's obituary it was eg
Joe BLOGGs folder, and wading through all Joe Bloggs details to find a
cutting.

I use same principal with all other papers eg Birth certificates. They can
give many details, parents names, parents marriage , occupation, birthplace
of parents, names of siblings already alive so the certificate to me is a
source to many fields, not just of the person who's birth it is.
I use a generic Source eg
'Certified Copy of Birth Registration' the relevant details in the Details
field and then my User Filing Number eg [BIRTH-23] so if I ever want to
find that certificate it's quick to look for number 23 in the Birth
certificate folder.

It's not often then that I want to actually see the certificate once the
details are entered but sometime's I might like to copy a will, certificate
etc.. for another researcher. It's quick then to locate them.

That's just my filing system, Nowhere perfect I know, but works for me.
:-))))

I'd just like to be able to see a list of User Filing Numbers used as well
as People connected to a particular User Filing Number. Maybe in a later
Version :-))
Regards
Sandy QUINN
