I'd suggest getting a good utilities program - such as Norton Systemworks -
and running that instead. I had constant problems with Win 98 until
installing Systemworks (other programs will do this, I just happen to be
familiar with Norton's). Ran it a couple of times to get all the registry
and other problems straightened out, then about once a week to keep it
straight after that.

...and found out that Win 98 was a *good* Operating System (it hadn't been
prior to that)... :>)

Never did get Win ME working real well, though Systemworks helped. Now I'm
running Win XP - the best Windows yet, I think - and I bought the updated
version of Systemworks to keep it clean. It needed it much less than
previous Windows versions, but still benefits from regular troubleshooting
and cleanup.

Windows tends to lose track of files - and, among other things, Systemworks
finds those files and corrects the registry entry. (Windows registry is
simply a huge plain text file that lists where everything is so the computer
can find it.)

You may need a video driver update (which you can find out about at:
http://catchup.cnet.com/ - you'll have to install their program, but it's
free - and it will check *all* your software for update needs). Chances are
the driver update is free from the video card manufacturer. But this sounds
more like a typical Windows 98 internal problem that can be solved with a
good trouble-shooting utility.
