Dear List, I have been reading the messages re whether to put the cemetery name in the Location or to put it in notes/ addresses fields.
This is a personal preference, but I was wondering if everyone knew about the SORT options available to the LOCATIONS list. I personally put the cemetery-church in my addresses and keep them to 4 fields ie actual place / town,parish/ state,county,province/ country eg 144 Norman Street, Gordonvale, Queensland, Australia Back Lane-Townend, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, England Martyn Street Cemetery, Cairns, Queensland, Australia Peria Cemetery, Peria, Northland, New Zealand St Peters Churchyard, Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England Then by keeping to 4 fields, I use the SORT facility on the MASTER LOCATIONS LIST. If I wanted to find all locations in Australia or England , I could change the order to list the last field first, if I wanted everything in Derbyshire, I change the order to read 3rd field first. You can have any combination of fields 1,2,3,4 4,3,2,1 4,2,3,1 4,1,3,2 3,4,2,1 3,2,1,4 etc.. etc.. Then the best bit is you change it back with the click of a button to read 1,2,3,4, again!! As long as you are consistent in using 4 fields and leading ,, if a field is unknown then I find it a great resource. I like personally like having my reports read with burial place as x cemetery in y town, w state, z country. Also it makes data entry a lot quicker if you don't have to keep going across to say burial Address fields to enter a cemetery name. Often it varies what type of list you might like to generate when organising say a research trip, eg all places in a certain town, or perhaps all areas in a certain state. Clicking on SORT LOCATIONs, change the order and hey presto you have the list. Extarct the information and Another click and hey presto back to usual field lists. This is something that I found works very well for me, everyone has their own preferences I know , but as I didnt notice any mention of this and great discussion about how to get reports to read right with cemtery names insert in brackets behind city name or at end of country name I though this might be a helpful option.
