1. The term frequently used by courts in NC in the early 1800s was "base born". Of course preachers were often further than one wagon axle greasin' (the equivalent of 1/2 day) away.
2. The pre-1850 accounting for base borns and the "adoption" of the kids of incapacitated or deceased relatives often diminishes the "purity" of genealogists who think they are not family historians. 3.
