Oh lordy.

I hadn't had this problem (but then I hadn't done any merges since the
update), but since it seemed like it might be due to the new update, I
decided to see if I could replicate it.

My my my.

First, I didn't think I'd be able to help because I couldn't even get an
import (Legacy file to Legacy file) to import at all due to errors. But then
I noticed that despite the fact that the import failed and added no people,
it did indeed do bizarre and unwonderful things to seemingly every marriage.
New spouses were added - sometimes as Unknown, sometimes repeating the real
spouses name, and sometimes linking to seemingly random persons (including
same gender). Further, these new marriages had dates and locations that had
imported from the import file that were totally unrelated - they weren't
even attached to the people in the import group. These new locations did
show up in the Master Location List, although the Master Name List shows no
new people.

Then I checked the Master Source List. Tons of new sources, again these
were sources unrelated to the import group. I did Show List on one of
them - instead of showing names, it said it was used by a particular
marriage number. I plugged that number in - got a "marriage" that has *no*
husband or wife, but did have marriage notes and sources. The marriage list
is full of these empty marriages.

It seems that something in the new update (or earlier, since I don't recall
when my last merge was), is causing a major disaster. The problem is
clearly not a simple merge/duplicate problem, but rather one of bizarre
marriage linking (and I don't mean that as social commentary <g>). I would
have just thought I was having random error if others weren't having the
same thing. Import seems unusable at present.

After one of the attempts to import, I got the following error log after
running Check/Repair (truncated):

Check/Repair of Legacy Family File: C:\Program Files\Legacy\Data\merge
test.fdb
Date: 07-08-2002
Please check this file very carefully.
It's a good idea to run another Check/Repair after you verify the items in
this file.
