I would usually be able to solve this problem by looking at the pedigree
view - that gives four generations, and while I may have 1 or 2 gens going
back on a collateral, I never have more than that, so the pedigree view will
clearly show which line leads back to my line, and I can follow it further
by clicking on the right arrow. If you do have more than 4 gens going back
on multiple lines, just make a pedigree report, and view it on screen - you
shouldn't have to go through very many pages before you see names you
recognize.
