Beth... I know you have a different set of needs from what I perceive mine to be. As I said ... I don't know enough about your requirements to comment upon ways to manipulate the program ... hence I won't comment. However being unable, or unwilling, to comment on your needs doesn't substantially alter the 'surname lineage' with which most of us are working.
Marianne's original post dealt with the creation of a 'middle name' field which it had been my intention to address. I apologize if I seem to have presumed beyond that intent. Thank you, however, for your observations regarding the incredible complexities with which you must contend. I wish you lots of luck! Scott -------Original Message------- From: Aliceann and Scott Carlton Marianne... I understand what you and others are saying (although I am not conversant with many of the European naming conventions so will defer those) but with the AKA's being able to be sorted within the name list I find there to be little reason for a "middle name" field. From a genealogical perspective (that is gene transmission) lineages have been primarily on the basis of surname' ----------------- Hi Scott, Well, you did cover yourself with that parenthesis in your first sentence. But the last sentence quoted above appears incomplete. How about: [L]ineages have been primarily on the basis of surname in those cultures which used surnames. <snip> Your farmer may have been Ole Larssen, married to Anne Hansdatter. A young family, they have only 2 kids: Lars Olsen and Berit Olsdatter. As you see, no two of them have the same "last name". And no surname, which, by definition, is common to all in the immediate family. Norway uses surnames now (by law, 1923, but it didn't "catch on" immediately in all places), while Iceland does not. --Beth in Norway .
