[LegacyUG] Hand held scanners

This is a little off subject.   My rural library is quite accommodating in 
securing via inter library loan books I use for genealogical research.  The 
time I have with them is quite limited.  I would like to use a hand held 
scanner for gleaning pertinent material for future evaluation.
  Has anyone had recent experiences with hand helds and OCR recognized?  I 
would like to hear both the positive and  less than satisfactory.
  I still have my old DOS based Marstex hand scanner with it's ISA 
card.  My current computer can only take PCI cards or a USB connection.
Any comments would be appreciated.
