The Adobe Acrobat PDF format was never really intended
to be edited.  PDF is the format of the output; you
edit the source documents, then output to a PDF file,
much like you would output to a printer.  Even in the
newer versions of the Acrobat Writer the ability to
edit the output is quite limited.

If you want to edit Legacy output, the best thing to
do would be to output as RTF format, then edit that
with MS Word or similar word processor. 
OpenOffice.org is a word processor that's completely
free, and it has the ability to output PDF format
files.
