Here's what I do.
If the grandchildren have the same surname as the grandparents, then I add a son to the couple and add the children to him. If they have a different name, I add a daughter and add the children to her.
For example: John Doe Sarah Doe Joe Doe, grandson Jack Doe, grandson Jane Doe, granddaughter Mary Smith, granddaughter
The tree would look like this
1. John Doe
+Sarah Jones m. 1840
...2. Son of John Doe
+Unknown
......3. Joe Doe
......3. Jack Doe
......3. Jane Doe
...2. Daughter of John Doe
+Smith
......3. Mary SmithI create a census event for each of the children, and mention in the note that he/she is living with grandparents. I make a note in the unknown son's research notes that he has been created for the purpose of tracking John & Sarah's grandchildren.
When I do sort them out, then I either change the name of the son (if the family structure is correct) or unlink them from the son and link them to the correct parent.
Hope this helps, Brenda.
Hey there List!
I would be most interested in your ideas as to how you list grandkids of a
couple when you don't know who the parents are -- but you do know who the
grandparents are?
For example.... on the 1870 for one of my family members there are the
parents: John and Sarah and 2 of their daughters (ages 29 and 26) then
there are a whole slew of young kids some the same age and the same name ---
it is going to take some time and research to sort out who they all belong
to --- but I don't want to exclude them from my database in the meantime.
I would be most interested in your ideas as to how you handle this problem.
Thanks for the great tips! Tamie
