Hello Charles,
I mentioned 'memory leaks' as an afterthought. I run a program called XPRam which will cleanup memory leaks. In simplistic terms - memory leaks are caused when a program loads a dll when it is needed and then forgets to unload it when it is no longer required. So it stays in memory, using RAM. If this happens often enough a lot of RAM can be used up casing MEMORY problems. XPRam solves this potential problem by unloading the dll when it is no longer needed. If your system has lots of RAM this may never be a problem.
Resource memory is something entirely different are Mr Chapman has already mentioned. In the old operating systems like Win 95, 98 and ME the amount of Resource memory they have is limited to 64Kb REGARDLESS of how much RAM you have in your computer. When programs such as Word, Legacy etc use it up the system locks u\p. The only way to restore resource is that familiar technique - reboot.
The new systems 2000, XP etc have solved this problem.
This is how I understand the problem - if I am incorrect I am sure the more knowledgeable listers will correct me.
Meantime I enjoy diving my old "Model A Ford" and don't look forward to buying new hardware, reinstalling programs and transferring my data files. The day will come - meantime I keep fighting it.
Guess I getting old an set in my ways ;-)

Hello Peter
I am also using Win98SEand experience lockups after things have been running for long periods. I am interested in what you call 'memory leaks', but have not had 'low memory messages' Charles in Invercargill

Bill,
I have run into a similar situation - I am still using Win98SE. Legacy seems to use a lot of PC resources and MAY have some memory leaks. I get a low memory message when using Legacy (only program open) and have to reboot often to restore resources.
Is anyone else that is using Win98 having a similar problem?
