It looks like a difficult to follow horizontal version of the Descendent Tree. (Perhaps the example I saw on the SOG site isn't a good one.) FTM has something like this although easier to follow than this dropline chart. Even better is FTM's Book version of the Descendent Tree. That and FTM books are great. Too bad about the rest of FTM ...

As I live in UK, I'm interested to know - what is "a UK Dropline Chart"?
Is family history in UK different from elsewhere :-) Regards, Mary Young

Interesting comment...
For many of us who are serious UK heritage researchers. For more years than
I can remember we have had to 'shoehorn' our research into US centric
programs (language and spelling aside). So yes UK family history research is
different.
TMG has just launched a UK version of their software (so they at least
recognise there are differences) but even as we speak, even this new version
is not quite right.
As you mention it in this thread, a feature of TMK UK version is a much
heralded UK dropline chart which is or would be wonderful if it was fully
functional.
Putting it simply, a UK dropline chart is the type of chart many of us were
trained to record in graphical form so often hand drawn and seen on rolls of
wallpaper spread around a room at reunions. It is drawn using the
conventions used since the 16th century when the Heralds visitations for
England and Wales were recorded. It is also the correct form for the
recording of pedigrees when registering with the college of arms.
There is a wonderful summary of the conventions used on the SOG (society of
genealogists - London) website on their information leaflet 3.
The UK dropline chart is a wonderful universal graphical representation of
any pedigree regardless of ancestor or descendant direction and shows easily
extended family groups and relationships.
Have a look at some of the published pedigrees for our Royal Family and if
they are from a reputable UK source they will show you a most interesting UK
dropline chart example.
