The Geo Database Locator in Legacy defines the location as: Washington, District of Columbia, District of Colombia, USA
All examples posted so far have used abbreviations and neglected to include the "Country". This is a habit which is evident in a vast number of US records. While there are no hard a fast rules, using abbreviations can cause problems when you come to exchange your records. Leaving off the country may be ok for your own personal records but again could be confusing for an overseas reader of your record. To add the name of a cemetery or church, etc., can easily be accomplished by adding it in the first field of a location as in: Washington in Glenwood Cemetery, District of Columbia, District of Colombia, USA That way you will have a graphic description; the town name will still sort alphabetically; and it reads well in any report created. The District of Columbia is not a county. It's a district.
