Sherry,
Legacy 5 has changed and yet the Legacy web site "dare to compare" with
other genealogy programs is out of date. Some web sites have comparisons of
old versions of Legacy (2000) with newer programs. A lot of products have
come and gone since I started computer genealogy with obsolete shareware in
1988 which had no GEDCOM.

Purchased Legacy 3 in March 2000 when Geoff attended a local conference.
Personally updated online or downloaded the whole Legacy program 113 times.
This computer has current versions of PAF 5.2 last updated July 2002,
RootsMagic 2.02, Legacy 5.0.0.173 and FTM 2005 released in August 2004.

Each program has a few different features and some limitations that need to
be considered for planning family books. Any version is "good enough" for a
reference database if the plan is to write a family book in a word processor
and add pictures one by one. A PDF book with acceptable report wording, note
spacing and right size pictures requires a lot more planning.

Showed Geoff the problem with the Relationship Calculator on his laptop Oct
16, 2004 when he attended the recent local conference. If there are three
spouses for a common ancestor, one generation goes missing in a chart
showing half first cousins who are descendants of first and third marriages.
This is easily duplicated with the Legacy sample file by adding an extra
(middle) spouse for Asa Brown, then swapping charts for Lorraine and
Lorenzo. The problem is also in Legacy 4 final build from November 2003
reported by a Legacy customer to the list early in 2004.

One of the deciding factors for the genealogy software used for data entry
is the need for wall charts and the preferred method for managing pictures.
Downloaded shareware TreeDraw 3 which sells for around $40 from the web site
in Scotland but it costs more than whole genealogy programs with built-in
wall charts.

It takes time to learn each genealogy program well enough to use for a small
family project. If the chosen program turns out to be incomplete or
unsuitable, some data from Legacy does not transfer in a "standard" GED
5.5. -- Elizabeth

I still have Legacy v2 on my old laptop and that *really* looks dated! New
views and other cosmetic enhancements have been added to the program over
the years
