Ron,
Sorry you've been having so much trouble with your system. These things are very frustrating. However, I don't think the problems with bolding you described are bugs. Bolding has nothing to do with Set/Clear Relationships. This dialogue box determines the relationship displayed next to each individual in Family view (Mother, GrandUncle etc).

The bolding is controlled by Tools> Set Direct Line As Preferred, and Options>Customise>Data Format>> Child List Indicators - Indicate Direct-line Children In Child List (bold). Its primary purpose is to facilitate navigation "down the tree" in Family View when one needs to select a particular child from those displayed. For this reason (I presume), only Children are bold. This is why your generation 1 person is not bold, as it is not a child (in Legacy). The same entries are shown bold in the Index view and on the Name List. In these views it would make more sense to have the "generation one" people bold as well, as the limitation to children no longer makes much sense, but that's not how it is.

You can start the Direct Line As Preferred from any person. This doesn't erase the previous "Direct Lines As Preferred" settings, (unless the new line intersects a previously set one). So if you are setting direct lines from the Index view, all the previously bold entries will stay bold, and you will get some new ones for the new line you have selected. To remove the bolding, you have to uncheck the "Indicate Direct-line Children In Child List" check box under Child List Indicators.

As with many things in Legacy, this is more complicated to explain than to use, so I hope the above makes sense.

Good luck with overcoming your system hassles!

Rob

Sherry,

I'm aware that full screen vs window can make a difference, but that's not
the case here. The same people remain bold no matter who is primary, or
whether relationships are set or cleared. So something's not working in
that module somewhere.

I looked at Legacy.usr and, while of course much is incomprehensible, saw
nothing in there which I could ID as the problem. Then also looked at the
other USR files but again saw nothing which made me say "AHA!"

As this is simply a cosmetic problem at this point, I'll wait for a solution
or some day when I don't have much on my plate.

Thanks (again)
Ron

Ron,

Before you start resetting things - are you looking at Legacy in a window or
full screen? In a windowed mode, the bold may not show up until the window
size is enlarged some.

The options that are set in the Options > Customize tabs are stored in the
Legacy.usr file. If you click on the "Reset to defaults" button on the
bottom of the Options > Customize window, that will reset your defaults.
Unfortunately, it's a lot of work to restore them to your original settings,
but sometimes that's all you can do.

Of course, deleting the legacy.usr file will do the same thing, even more
completely.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Paula,

On seeing your note, my first reaction was "another duh here!). So I
checked those settings, and they were already set as you suggest. However,
I did find that reinstallation had changed some settings, so I will be
reviewing those.

This bolding problem seems to be only a cosmetic problem with Index View.
No matter what I tinker with primary person or set/unset, the same certain
individuals remain bolded.

Within Family/Pedigree Views relationships do appear. However, I just now
noticed that regardless of settings, the Bold/Underline option is not
working, but the alternate option of <funnysymbol> and + are working.
Again, simply a cosmetic glitch.

Again I ask if these little glitches might be something in a *.usr file -
and if so, which one? (sure don't want to reset everything!)

thanks
RonKZ
