My CD burner also came with this program by Adaptec - v4.02. After going through your same frustrations, I noticed on the software installation disc for Easy CD Creator, was another program called DirectCD v3.01. DirectCD will let you back-up directly to the CD without going through those additional steps. It acts just like another hard drive. I'm using Win98se and my Adaptec software is about three years old. If you haven't installed the DirectCD software, try it. Works like a charm.
