As I see it, there are two ways to show non biological children:

1. For "simple" step children, just enter them under their biological parents, and check the "display 1/2 kids" box. Do not explicitly add any relationships to their parents. The children of each pair of parents will then be shown once, with the 1/2 relationships correctly indicated, together with the respective biological parent in brackets.
2. For more complex relationships, add the child's actual relationship, such as adopted, to the non-biological parent. If the "Show Status on Family View.. On Children" box is checked, the relationship should be shown against the children's name (I think). In this case the "display 1/2 kids" box should be unchecked to show only the child only once.

The problem is that the "display 1/2 kids" setting applies to the file, not just a family. So, if you have both simple step children and adopted step children in the same file, you have the following two options, neither of which is ideal:

1. Leave "display 1/2 kids" on and tolerate duplicate entries for those (presumably few) cases where there are adopted step children.
2. Leave "display 1/2 kids" off, and manually set the relationships for all non-biological children. This avoids having duplicates, and shows the relationships explicitly, but requires you to enter the relationship for every non-biological child.

An ENHANCEMENT REQUEST would be to allow "display 1/2 kids" to be set per family, rather than globally. This would avoid the need for the above compromises.

Hope the above makes sense, and is correct! It's based on all the discussion over the last few days, plus some experimentation.

Cheers,
Rob

Hi Stuart & Mary,
What you describe is exactly what I see.
Thank you both for your interest in what, I guess, it the way it is supposed to appear.
Ann

Hi, Stuart
Well, maybe we are going round in circles here. I'm totally confused.
Are you saying, it is OK for the same child, same RIN, to show twice
in the Family View because it has 2 different relattionships to (perm
2 of 3) parents?
This "doubling" of child is, I think, what originally prompted this thread!
Cheers,
Mary Young
