Sherry- If Paul can go from Access to Excel format without too much trouble, I can tell him how to generate a Gedcom from an Excel file. I go to cemeteries, and on my PDA. All I put in Excel on my PDA are the names, Date of births, Date of deaths, date marriage (If I see it on the stone), etc. No relationship at this point.
At home, I check my name spelling, and look for corrections to make. Using proper titles from Gedcom, I make some better titles. Then I export, and I have a Gedcom of individuals with names, and dates. I check to make sure the Gedcom is properly formatted, and then import that gedcom into a family by itself. No one in the family is shown related to anyone else yet. At this point, I connect everyone up that I can, add pictures of the stones, a picture of the deceased if I am lucky enough to get one, etc. After I finish making the family "Legacy-happy," I save it, back it up, back up my main family, then do one of two things: Use a Split Screen to pick names from the new data base and place them in proper location and relationship on the main database, or, Do an import into my main database and search for all unlinked individuals and link them to someone. Does it save time? I think so, I did not have to retype all the dates and names. But, the first time someone does this, it is confusing.
