Sharon, >From what you describe, I would say that your main computer#1 has a hard-drive and/or a Windoze registry problem, probably the latter.
Assuming you are running XP, try system restore, back to a date before you began having your problems with Legacy. Not a completely pain-free solution, as you may have to do some re-installations and replace some shortcuts. You may elect to skip this step. Definitely run ScanDisk, then try Legacy again. If the above don't help, back up your Legacy datafile(s), then uninstall Legacy, all versions. Also any other app which might be misbehaving. You may want to copy your latest/greatest set of *.USR files to a temporary directory. Then go delete all Legacy program folders which remain. Then run Spybot S&D - free. Then run a registry cleaner - Registry Mechanic (free download of trial version may suffice), Norton Utilities, whatever. That should be all of the cleanup process needed. You should now be okay to reinstall Legacy - I'd suggest downloading the latest v.5. If you are going to also install v.4 again, make certain to install it into a different folder! Do NOT restore your *.USR files until after you have verified that Legacy is now running normally. You can restore those afterward and watch for the old problem to reoccur; if problems return you must delete them. You may want to check with Legacy Support on this part. If all the above does not work, your unhappy last alternative will be backup/backup/backup. This is a good time to consider buying a new and maybe bigger harddrive; they are cheap now. If so, I would definitely NOT use XP's "restore documents and settings" process - as it quite likely would just bring the old problem(s) to your new harddrive. Otherwise, reformat your harddrive (use a "wipe" process), and start all over, including the whole Windoze update process, and reinstalling all your apps. Hey, it's all part of Windoze fun, and only takes 2-3 days! Perhaps some others on LUG will plug in additional/other suggestions, so suggest you wait a day or two to see if anything more/better comes in. and good luck! To answer some of your questions Sherry- yes, I've been in contact with support many times over the last 5 months. Support is great! I've worked with Jim Terry and spoken to him multiple times on the issues I am having. The first of my multiple problems began after a build to my version 5.0 deluxe. I was unable to backup any files. I kept recieving an error code that Jim was familar with but seemed unsure of what was causing it. He said he only knew of a few times they had ever seen that error code. Some one had brought their computer in to the office since they were unable to duplicate it in support and it had been a lengthy process to fix the problem. When I would check my backup file it appeared to have saved the new data I had entered although my Legacy program would tell me the backup had failed. Jim suggested I uninstall and reinstall my program. My computer (Dell, running Windows XP) would never let me delete all of the folders that were suggested in Jim's instructions. The prompt would say "unable to delete." Jim has sent me several other things to try none of which have corrected the problems. I recently prepared a Temple Ready file and when I tried to enter the information that was cleared at the genealogy library Legacy would not read the file and enter the information. I have not contacted support about this new issuse since I'm sure it must be related to a problem with my computer. When I installed Legacy on another computer I was able to transfer the information from my disk to the data in the program without any problems. Hoping that the last build (Sept) would maybe solve my phantom problems, it only made them worse. When the build was complete I now had two versions of Legacy 5.0 on my computer, the standard and the deluxe. The standard version does not contain any of my data and the deluxe version which has my data does not show the current build. When you look in all my program files I also still have version 4.0 on my computer. The uninstall program for version 4.0 does not work either. I always do my windows updates in a timely fashion. Legacy seems to be the only program that I am having any issues with. I'm sure somehow in all of my attempts to solve the backup issues I must have deleted something or corrupted some important piece of information that is key to making my program run on my computer. After many months of working with Jim he really didn't know what else to try. If you have any further ideas I would be grateful.
