Your mind is anything BUT illogical. Putting the maiden name (i.e., the ORIGINAL surname) in the surname field is a standard practice for many good reasons and there should be no reason NOT to do it that way. And, as you mention, there are other ways to locate the subsequent surnames that many women have used.

In Legacy you can go to Marriage List|Options|Sort by Given Name, Surname and then by wife's name. I've never had a problem finding someone whose married name I didn't know.
