Before everyone gets all carried away here with AKA's, there is one thing
you need to know.

A standard Gedcom AKA Event transfers as one would expect. We all
appreciate Legacy's sweetheart AKA feature, *but* Legacy AKA data *does not*
transfer properly via Gedcom.

Despite having the same moniker, somehow the two AKA's are different within
the Legacy programming. Thus when producing Gedcom output, the Legacy AKA's
may or may not appear, or may be mislocated in the receiving application, or
may be switched and displayed as the chosen Main Name.

This is a problem only with Gedcom, and among my own reasons for no longer
exporting Gedcom or providing Gedcom to other other researchers. These
problems have caused me to delete my sub-web built via phpGedView. It also
affects my data on GenCircles, produced by "Family Tree Legends" using
Gedcom data. FTL has such an easy transition from Gedcom to searchable data
on Gencircles, so it's a tool which I hate to abandon.

A Legacy programming fix which absolutely matches the two AKA's is needed,
but that won't fix the problems inherent in Gedcom, nor how other apps
import or export Gedcom.

For those who don't use Gedcom, no problem!! Others should use some caution.

I so totally agree! I've been getting so many good ideas on reasons
for using the AKA fields from people in this group. But to use AKA
fields effectively for several different reasons and types of data,
they need to be a little more flexible.

The way I've been using them so far pretty much involves entering EITHER
a given name OR a surname, but not both. I didn't like the visual
clutter of seeing quoted nicknames in the given name field, so a while
ago I changed them to AKAs. I also use AKA given names for foreign-born
individuals who adopted US versions of their name. AKA surnames are
used for those who shortened a lengthy foreign-name or who at some time
decided to use an alternate spelling.

For my use, I've been able to select the options to print the AKAs
at the end of the paragraph in narrative reports and to omit the AKAs
from the index. However, if I began using some of the suggestions
I've seen here, I might want the opposite for them -- don't print the
AKAs in the narrative, but include them in the index.

Wouldn't it also be nice if each individual AKA could have an override
check box for where it should or should not appear as well as placing
them in the proper order?

Bob

It would be nice to be able to place the different names chronology as
in a timeline form. My grandmother was married 4 times she also had a
birth name and a adopted name that's six right there, and she used
three different middle names. all nine different names I have citied
sources for. An up or down button would help.

Does any body agree if this freature was added.
