There is no way around this unless you connect her to Tom BROWN and Mary SMITH and then add child status and/or parent-child relationship to show Tom as step-father or whatever you prefer. If you do that, she will then show twice in some reports which I find messy.
The display works this way to show the children of the "marriage" in focus first.
If, from a very young age, she has belonged to the family of Tom and Mary, you may prefer to only refer to her unknown father in notes. Then she is always included in reports of Tom and Mary. This wouldn't be strictly correct but so long as you include the situation in notes and child status it should work OK. It's a bit more debatable when you know the father.
When making decisions like this, I take into consideration the way the family views the child and whether you are dealing with living children or not. If from the past, I enter it correctly and live with the display. When I was producing reports for a family reunion of my second cousins a few years back, I consulted the immediate families about several children in this and similar situations. I took their advice on how to link the children. For various reasons, some asked to suppress the real parent for this occasion. I adjusted my database, produced the reports, and then changed it back. One reason was that one of the children and cousins didn't know the real situation. It didn't seem to me to be my place to let them know.
My thoughts on this, Cathy

I have just found another anomoly with the half children display. I have (several probably, but one I just happened to notice) a woman who had a child with an unknown partner prior to her marriage to a (presumably) different partner. I have the display set to show half children. In the family view showing her husband the five children she had with her him can be sorted by date. The half sibling, who was the wife's, but not the husband's, shows AFTER the other five children even though she was born first. If I go to Children's settings, the box is headed Children of Tom BROWN and Mary SMITH and so doesn't include Jane SMITH as she isn't a child of Tom and Mary and so isn't listed to be sorted. Does anyone know of a way around this?
