I started with myself as #1, my father #2, mother #3, and so on until I had parents, grandparents and others I wanted numbered as my closest and direct relatives. I put these numbers in the RIN and User ID field, after that Legacy assigned numbers. The numbers stay stable until I deleted , unlinked and added people from files received from relatives. Say the last number I had put into the RIN was #8 and what should have been #9 was 578 , the next 3590 etc. I would do the following:
go into Tools , scrolled down to Renumbering RINs and clicked on that.
Then I went to the second option which looked something like this...
O Fill in all missing RINs from RINs greater than or equal to 8 So I clicked on this which puts a dot in the
middle of the circle and the # 8 inside the box as above where I have it underlined. There should be a rectangle where the square is. This automatically changes the numbers after #8 and puts them into a sequential order, it doesn't change any numbers before #8.
This keeps the numbers sequencial. None of the numbers change, they stay the same until I delete and so on. Fortunately I haven't had so many deletions. I had a lot when I ran into many convoluted intermarriages trying to figure out who belonged to whom. Some people use these RIN and MRIN numbers for their paper files of wills ,census etc. and they want the numbers to be sequencial in order of the generations so they need a way to keep the numbers sorted. I don't file my paper files like that, so as long as the numbers are sequential I'm happy. I think they could use my idea to keep the numbers sorted in Legacy and use them the paper files. One must just keep checking the RIN's assigned. I keep my paper files very simple. I use binders, one assigned to each grandparent . Then I have a section for census which is filed by the year. Another section holds marriage information sorted the same way.
Hope this helps. I think there is some confusion with "MRINs renumbering by themselves". this makes it sound like they change by magic when you're not looking or by gremlins or something. :-)

I received family files from relatives and put them in a new file, then manually merged what I wanted from their's and mine . Legacy would pick up the RIN and MRIN from the relative's file. Where my numbers would be in the 400's, their's were in the 3,000, 6,000 and 20,000+ numbers. I was fairly new to Legacy,so perhaps I didn't know how to work the program properly, but it seemed like no matter what I did, what I checked off or didn't check, Legacy would pick up these numbers. Unlinking and deleting could also be a problem. I finally suceeded in sorting the numbers easily. Now if I delete or unlink I automatically check the RIN and ID numbers. I don't use the RIN or MRIN numbers for filing. I have my own system that works for me, so I don't worry what number my 32nd great grandfather has, I just want to keep the numbers in order as I had so many people to add and many different numbers were confusing, especially when they would jump from 350 to 19,345.
