There is no "default" setting, Donna, upon entering details for a new child. Each new child is added after the last child's entry. The order is then set on each family view screen after the entry is made. Just right click one of the children and select CHILDREN'S SETTINGS from the context menu. When the settings screen opens you can click either the SORT button (ALT-S) or the ORDER up or down arrows in the bottom right corner. The marriage list is similar.
