Aha!  So, I'm guessing I'll find it as a selection/filter option on 
reports...?  Hmmm... will have to check that out!

They indicate your level of interest in researching either the ancestors
or descendents of the individual.  Kind of like Surety Levels for sources.
It's a relative scale to let you prioritize your future research.

Can someone please share with me what the "Anc" and "Des" boxes are at the
bottom of the Individual Information screen?  I looked in Help but didn't
see them mentioned for that screen.  They appear to be counters or
something.
