Something else to consider if Legacy is going to make these changes - do you want to print or publish in a web site living, dead or 'unknown' people?

Currently I do not print or publish any living people - my simple solution is to make the person living until they are 100 years old and let the software do what it was designed to do and flip the tag once they reach age 100 for those recent ancestors that are unknown.

Currently, the program does not allow you to leave it blank. It is two

asking for a third radio button for "Unknown".
Of course, an option would be to have two check boxes for "Yes" (living) or
"No" (dead) and you leave both blank if you don't know, but that would also
require modifications to the software... and I think more modifications than
what was originally suggested.

In 40+ years of doing genealogy I have never mis-understood the idea that when a field is blank it means the person entering the data did not know the information. In other words, a blank field means "Unknown".

What an amazing principle....

So why not give the researcher the option of having "Yes" or "No" checked,
OR both left blank?
