Just to make matters muckier - although there is no Tag 9 option on the 
GEDCOM export fields option screen, it is actually exported along with the 
other tags if you select _TAG, _TAG2 .... _TAG8 . Curiouser and curiouser 
however in my GEDCOM export _TAG4 is missing although marked on the export 
screen and used in the Legacy database. It was the tag that I set most 
recently, using the search facility. I don't know if that's relevant or not.

As for what people use tags for - in my case I am currently using tags 4 
through 9 to signal which of the UK censuses each person appears in from 
1851 to 1901. My Tag 1 flags people that I have personally met during their 
lifetime and my Tag 2 is for people whose records I have now audited for 
completeness. Tag 3 isn't currently being used, but watch this space ...
