Nothing to be sorry about, choosing a courier or other fixed pitch font absolutely does work in keeping text aligned. be sure you count correctly when lining up your columns.
If your printout came out skewed, I'm sure you mis-counted. I did test it now, but apparently even though the Courier font is used on the screen, the reports don't use Courier even when that is specified as the font for Notes on reports. I have no idea why not.
