I believe I have the answer for those prepared to use webmail. (I'm sorry this therefore won't suit those on dial-up.)

Get a Gmail account and subscribe to individual messages. Gmail works
brilliantly for my genealogy email list subscriptions. It groups
messages together by subject - so you get a whole string filed
together. It hides text repeated from earlier emails giving you the
option to "Show quoted text". It has 1Gb capacity so encourages users
to archive emails rather than delete them - it then uses Google
technology to search those archived messages where necessary. You can
set up filters to identify, for example, all messages to the Legacy
list or all emails sent directly to you. As you can see I'm a bit of
a convert. I've got no connection with the product - just a satisfied
customer.

Gmail is still in beta so is only available by invitation but I've got
50 invitations to give away so would be happy to forward them to
listers if they drop me an email.

I believe it was Sherry who suggested subscribing to receive each message.
I find it easier to delete all emails associated with a topic I know I'm not
interested in (eg, GEDCOM, PDF) and then just read the first of a thread to
see if I want to read further. Else delete! Just another
uggestion. --Paula
