Would be careful here as this could be confusing to future generations who may not be aware if your circumstances. Is the intent to show two original names (which is your intent), three given names and a surname or perhaps a hyphenated name with a missing hyphen? Most of us know what "names in caps" might mean but that is not true of everyone. They may wonder why both (names) are done that way but think it is just a fluke. If you wish to keep this way be sure and make an event, or note, entry clarifying the situation. The problem with doing this is that we don't always send events or notes, or at least I do not, to all who people who request info.

To my way of thinking we should always think carefully how future generations are going to read and interpret our information - we must be very careful and avoid all confusion. This it why it is so important to avoid most abbreviations, names variations from the norm, etc. Always clarify in detail what the situation entails. Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Keeping Track of Adopted Names

Hi D,
I am an adoped child with a known birth surname as well as an
adopted surname. So is my sister.

In my Legacy file I keep track of us by using both surnames, with
the birth surname first in all caps and the adopted name second in
all caps. In the name list my sister and I appear at the end of the
list of people with our birth surname, with both surnames in all
caps, just as all the other surnames are in caps, except we have
two surnames in all caps.

It appears thusly: Alice Irene SMITH JONES
and my sister Thora Lynne SMITH JONES

If this solution appeals to you, in Customize, Data Format, I have
checked "Don't change what I write." in both places, and in
Displaying Surnames I have checked "Show surnames in upper
case letters." Works for me. -- Alice

Just wondering how you all keep track of names of adopted children.

We have child with surname of BirthName
who is adopted by husband and wife with surname of NewName.

The child knows she was adopted and that her birth name is BirthName,
but everyone knows her as NewName and all her current documents list
NewName.

In the main Individual Record, do you list the surname as BirthName or
NewName? And do you just put the other in as an AKA?

The reason this came up, is she now has children of her own and they
have the surname of NewName.

I feel I'm making this more complicated than it need be...

Thanks.
Stay JOLLY!
