Just remember two things, Kathi, honesty and simplicity.
Fact: Two people were together and had a child (your mother).
Fact: Whether they were married is unknown since no marriage certificate

yet been found.

Apparently that's all you know and thus what you need to record for those
specific individuals. Other data should be recorded based on the facts.
I have never been able to understand why children born out of wedlock
thought it was their fault somehow. The child has no part of the moral 
wrong
or stigma. I was not base born but, if I was, is there some government
regulation that I must be a different person? Birth is by natural law and
marriage is by civil law.

And, just how many nosy people will be searching your genealogy to learn 
how
many children were base born so they can gossip about it? People are not
your mom's or her parents' judge - God is.

I was reading with interest about the "tangled  web" regarding marriage
dates, birth dates and adoptions.  I have my own  unsolved story regarding
this.
On my mom's side of the family, my  grandmother and grandfather (Waldo
surname)
never ever celebrated a wedding  anniversary, according to my mom.  On
various census records, she states  she was married at different ages.
These
grandparents did not get along  well, and my mom states her father would
take off
for a month or two at a time  when they were not getting along.  They 
never
wore
wedding  rings.
