Marie,
Whether or not one can back-up directly to CD depends on what's
supported by the operating system and CD burner software.  Some of the
older CD software doesn't allow applications (like Legacy) to write
directly to the CD.  Some of the software has a "Direct CD" add-on that
adds that capability.  Actually, the programs that appear to write
directly are probably writing to the hard disk, then to the CD, just
hiding that step from the user.

If direct back-up works for you, fine.  For someone who's not sure,
it's safer to do the two steps separately.
