Another technique often used is called Harvesting - which is the process of taking email addresses from places like web sites and mailing lists (such as this one) to compile the lists used to send spam.
The only way to not get spam is to not use email. Eventually over time no matter how nonsensical your email address you will start to receive spam and if you are not following best practices then once you start receiving the spam it will only get worse.
You might like to consider keeping an email address for your own personal use between friends and another address for mailing lists. At the end of the day if you start to receive too much spam to your mailing list email address then you can just change it for a new one and your personal email address remains less cluttered and your friends do not have to keep track of all your email address changes.
Legacy already have implemented somethings to help the subscribers to this list but I wonder if someone from Legacy might also like to consider implementing something like Tagged Message Delivery Agent (TMDA) which can be found at http://tmda.net/index.html (its free!). This could provide even better protectection for our email addresses on this list.

Actually, Marie's address is quite a sensible way to create an email address. Why? Well it fools spammers that's why. Spammers delight in using software to create email addresses using common names or words and tacking on known ISP's. They will even add numbers to make multiple addresses for common names - John; John1; John2, etc. as an example.
So in Marie's example (and mine incidentally) there is no "word". There are many, many addresses like this on the Internet, so if you delete such messages in the belief that it is nefarious you may miss a vital piece of information. You may even miss this one :-).
If you have your name in any form in an address you will be subjected to spam - sooner or later. You could eliminate 90% of spam by adopting Marie's style. Think about it.

You're probably seeing the messages with a subject line of "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". That's not an encrypted subject, that's somebody's idea of an e-mail address. Just ignore the thread.

I'm getting a lot of Google email and the subject line is encrypted. If I can't read the subject line it is not going to be opened on this computer. Robert Sjolin Legacy User Group Etiquette guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp
